Conservation

We prioritise ethical farming and conservation, allowing our Angus cattle to thrive on lush pastures while actively supporting biodiversity and a healthier environment.

Commitment to Conservation and Biodiversity

Land Regeneration and Wildlife Habitat Creation

At Summerlea Farm, conservation is at the heart of our mission. In 2020, in partnership with NRM North, we embarked on a project to restore river habitats by planting thousands of native trees along the Second River.

This initiative aims to protect the endangered Giant Freshwater Crayfish (Astacopsis gouldi), the largest freshwater invertebrate globally, which is native to northern Tasmania and threatened by habitat loss, poaching, siltation, and climate change.

Our dedication to environmental stewardship extends beyond this project. During the winter months, as we focus on calving, we engage in land regeneration activities that preserve and expand native bushland, enhancing biodiversity and supporting local wildlife.

Importantly, all fees from our farm tours are reinvested into these conservation efforts, allowing visitors to directly contribute to the health and sustainability of our ecosystem.

Through these combined actions, we strive to ensure that Summerlea Farm remains a beacon of ethical farming and environmental care for generations to come.

Sustainable Farming

Ethical Farming and Land Regeneration

We are deeply committed to conservation and sustainable farming practices that support both our livestock and the environment. Our 100-acre farm in Lilydale, Northern Tasmania, is home to a small herd of Angus cattle, which allows us to focus on providing them with the best care and nutrition. By maintaining a small herd, our cows enjoy ample space to roam over lush green pastures, which not only contributes to their health and happiness but also minimises the environmental impact of our farming operations. This commitment to space and freedom is central to our belief in promoting a healthy ecosystem where cattle and wildlife can coexist harmoniously.

Our dedication to producing high-quality, single-origin Angus beef extends beyond the animals themselves to the land they graze on. Our cattle are entirely grass-fed, ensuring they receive natural nutrition without the use of grains, antibiotics, or growth hormones. This approach is not only ethical and sustainable but also enhances the quality of our beef, offering a flavour that reflects the purity of its origins. By selling our beef directly to restaurants and customers, we maintain complete traceability and transparency, assuring that every cut of meat has been ethically raised and handled from start to finish. Our farm is proudly accredited by Meat Standards Australia and Greenham’s “Never Ever” program, underscoring our commitment to excellence in farming standards.
