About Us
Blending heritage and innovation, offering a genuine taste of sustainable farming by the way of ethically raised Angus beef and immersive farm experiences.
Our Heritage
Six Generations of Farming
Summerlea Farm, nestled in the scenic landscape of North Lilydale, Tasmania, has been a proud family farm for six generations. We are currently transitioning from traditional farming to a sustainable and regenerative approach, focusing on raising Angus beef in a way that honours our connection to the land, history, and community. By keeping our herd small and selling directly to our customers, we ensure that our practices are ethical, transparent, and in harmony with nature.
The story of Summerlea Farm began in the late 1870s when Rick Mahnken’s ancestors moved from Germany to start a new life in Tasmania. Over the years, the farm has produced everything from prize-winning potatoes to locally renowned sugar plums, but today it is known for its high-quality Angus beef. Rick and Elizabeth Mahnken have brought their own experiences and values to the farm, blending tradition with a commitment to continual learning and quality improvement in both land and animal management.
Looking to the future, we are dedicated to making Summerlea Farm a peaceful, thriving place where visitors can relax, recharge, and connect with nature. Our conservation efforts, including the restoration of the Second River to protect the endangered Giant Freshwater Crayfish, reflect our respect for the environment and our commitment to sustainability. We invite you to join us on a farm tour, where you can enjoy the exceptional food and wine of the region while experiencing the beauty and tranquillity of farm life. At Summerlea Farm, we believe in choosing happiness over profit, and we love sharing our passion for farming, quality, and nature with every visitor.
